How to Choose a Home Theater System

Whether you're building a dedicated home theater room or upgrading your living room setup, choosing the right system can feel overwhelming. Projectors, soundbars, AV receivers, 4K, Dolby Atmos — the options are endless. As East Tennessee's local A/V specialists, we help homeowners cut through the noise every day. 1. Start With the Room, Not the Gear

The single biggest mistake people make is shopping for equipment before thinking about the room. Room dimensions, ceiling height, wall materials, and natural light all affect what will perform best. A projector that looks stunning in a light-controlled basement can be washed out in a bright living room. A soundbar that sounds great in a small apartment may leave a large family room feeling empty.

Before buying anything, measure your room and think about how it will be used — daily family TV, dedicated movie nights, gaming, or all three. That shapes every decision downstream.

2. Projector vs. Large-Screen TV

Both are excellent options in the right context:

• Large-screen TV (75"–100"+): Best for rooms with ambient light, easier to set up, and modern 4K OLED and QLED panels produce stunning image quality. No warm-up time, works in any lighting.
• Projector + screen: Best for dedicated rooms with light control. Gives you a true cinematic experience at 100"–150"+. Requires a proper screen, proper throw distance, and ideally acoustic treatment.

For most East Tennessee homeowners, a premium large-screen TV in a family room and a projector in a dedicated theater room is the ideal combination — if the budget allows.

3. Don't Underestimate Audio

Video gets all the attention, but audio is what makes a home theater feel like a theater. A great sound system on a modest TV will always outperform a great TV with a mediocre soundbar. We recommend:

• At minimum: A quality soundbar with a subwoofer for casual setups
• For a real experience: A 5.1 or 7.1 surround system with a dedicated AV receiver and in-wall or in-ceiling speakers
• For the full cinema feel: Dolby Atmos with overhead speakers (7.1.4 or 9.1.4 configurations)

In-wall and in-ceiling speakers are worth every penny — they disappear into your room and sound dramatically better than speakers sitting on shelves.

4. Plan for Control

A home theater with five remotes quickly becomes a frustration instead of a luxury. A unified control system — whether that's a simple universal remote or a full RTI automation platform — ties everything together. One button press turns on the TV, dims the lights, lowers the shade, and sets the volume. It's not a luxury; it's how a home theater is supposed to work.

5. Consider the Wiring Before You Finish the Walls

If you're in new construction or a renovation, this is your best window to run HDMI, speaker, and power wiring inside the walls. Doing it after the fact is expensive and messy. A proper pre-wire by a licensed low-voltage installer sets you up for any equipment upgrade down the road — at a fraction of the cost of retrofitting.
